  1. Going Fishing

From the recording Mainline

Two weeks after the birth of my daughter, I was given a fly-fishing rod for my birthday. After months of trying to find a time to go and use it, I was able to sneak away for a morning of fishing on the Madawaska River. I had some beginner’s luck, and I was pretty excited to spend a morning on the river without my phone.

Lyrics

When I wake up in the morning and the moon’s still shining
Clean and clear and crisp in the sky
And you’re lying there beside me, dreaming that you might be
Just a-having something special on your mind
But it’s 4 am in August, and the frost has come upon us
And I catch the scent of fall on the air
The mayflies are going on the Grand River flowing
I will tiptoe out the door to be there

I’m going to the river (I’m going fishing)
I’m going to the river (I’m going fishing)
I’m gonna wade out to the middle where It’s my best bet,
But I can’t bring my phone because it might get wet
I’m going to the river (I’m going fishing)
I’m going to the river (I’m going fishing)
I’m going to the river (he’s going he’s gone)
I’m going to the river

Well the hatch is on the river like a champagne bottle
Popping at the surface of the eddy
And like a mopey wife of Lot, I turn to look at what I’ve got
I can’t believe my luck, I turn to get ready
With a pheasant feather fly and coffee thermos at my side
I stake a spot and step from the shore
I run my hands beneath the surface, splash my face and find the purpose
I don’t think that I could ever ask for more

Chorus
