  1. Spadina Gal

From the recording Mainline

I wrote this tune about the 506 College Streetcar in Toronto. I used to frequently take this streetcar to see my girlfriend who lived at Spadina and College. On one of my trips on the 506, I took out a notepad and just started writing about the shops, signs, and sights along College Street, wanting to capture the exciting hustle and bustle of riding a streetcar across the city in anticipation of seeing the person that you’re head over heels for. I’m happy to say, I’m still with my “Spadina Gal”.

Lyrics

Ridin’ on a streetcar, looking over town
“Flowers for a dollar”, “goods by the pound”
Watch the people passin’, listen to the sound
I’m ridin’ on a streetcar looking over town
Spadina Gal, I’m coming home to you

Well, I’m going out to see that gal of mine
A couple drinks of whiskey I’ll be feeling fine
“Five dollar pints” on a chalkboard sign
I’m going out to see that gal of mine
Spadina Gal, I’m coming home to you

Well, get on my feet and ring that bell
Get out of this car, get out of this hell
I’m gonna find me some heaven outside of this cell
On my feel and ring that bell
Spadina Gal, I’m coming home to you

Well, she’s always waiting when I come around to call
Just sleeping in the kitchen with her feet in the hall
I’m gonna wear my boots ‘cause I ain’t that tall
Always waiting when I come around to call
Spadina Gal, I’m coming home to you
